Before the Lambrini Girls existed, it was down to Pussyliquor to proudly fly the flag for uncensored female rage on the Brighton punk/riot grrrl scene.
Pussyliquor’s band members met in Brighton and bonded over a passion for hard-core music and even harder core feminist beliefs. They have the no-nonsense and in your face approach that recalls the spirit and energy of Cosey Fanni Tutti, L7 and The Slits. Together they’re fighting a cause and celebrating what it means to be a woman.
Ari Black (vocals), Victoria Lewis Piper (drums) and Tallulah Turner-Fray (bass) were playing a live gig and a certain Hannah Villanueva was there in the crowd and immediately knew that they were for her.
Let’s pick up the story from Hannah (lead guitar):
When I was 18, I came to Pussyliquor’s first show at Green Door Store and decided they were my new favourite band. I approached a band member after the show and told them to let me join. I said kick a guitarist out, have me instead. Ten years later….say goodbye to me at the same venue. I’m leaving England for a while.
I don’t know how long I’ll be gone for, and one day they’ll probably have me outside their windows with a boombox in the rain begging to come back. They’re my best friends in the entire world and running off to chase other dreams was the hardest decision I’ve ever made.
Being in this band is by far the most meaningful and important part of my life, and it has been the only thing keeping me in place geographically. I have loved playing for you all so deeply and it has meant the world to me to see so many people resonate with our music and ethos. I am not exaggerating when I say this project and the people I do it with saved my life and gave me meaning in some of the darkest times a person can go through. It’s only because of the adventures this band has taken me on that I have the strength and confidence to go and experience life elsewhere. I know they will kick ass in my absence.
So coming full circle, Pussylquor are playing live again at the Green Door Store and the banner reads “Hannah’s Going Away”. They will be headlining the concert which is happening on Saturday 29th August, and support will come from Electric Cowboy Club (ECC) and Shark Belly. The flyer also says “+ Super Special Secret Guest”. We have no idea who this could be, but I guess the only way to find out is to attend this FREE ENTRY concert!
