The Green Door Store holds legendary status in the UK’s grassroots music scene. Located directly underneath Brighton Railway Station’s Victorian arches, it’s nationally renowned as one of the country’s most vital independent venues. With its cobbled floor, exposed brickwork, and intimate, sweaty atmosphere, it serves as a crucial springboard for emerging talent and an essential stop on the UK touring circuit. Many bands play here just before breaking out into the mainstream—it’s the kind of place where fans can proudly claim, “I saw them first.”
Looking at their upcoming live gigs over the next couple of months (late April and May), there is a fantastic mix of talent coming through. Here is a breakdown of the live bands grouped by broad genres:
Indie, Alternative & Post-Punk
The venue is perhaps best known for hosting blistering indie and alternative rock gigs, and the upcoming calendar reflects that:
- Lime Garden & HotWax: Playing a special ‘Garden Party’ gig, these are two of the most exciting buzzy bands right now. Lime Garden brings quirky indie-pop, while HotWax delivers raw, grunge-infused alt-rock.
- Picture Parlour: A highly anticipated gig (already down to low tickets!). They are a fast-rising indie-rock outfit known for cinematic, swaggering guitar anthems.
- Bloodworm: Bringing a much darker, intense energy, this band leans heavily into gothic post-punk.
- Pouch, BABYTEETH & Maiden Ray: An excellent selection of emerging alternative, punk, and rock bands making noise on the underground circuit.
Acoustic, Folk & Singer-Songwriter
The arches also provide incredible acoustics for more stripped-back and atmospheric sets:
- Sean Rowe: An acclaimed American singer-songwriter famous for his incredibly deep, resonant baritone voice and soulful folk music.
- Esme Emerson: A brilliant rising indie-folk/pop duo.
- Penelope Trappes + Rún: Expect something highly atmospheric here. Trappes is known for her haunting, ethereal, and experimental ambient music.
UK Hip Hop & Alt-Pop
- Dirty Dike: A massive name in the underground UK Hip Hop scene, known for his raw, unapologetic lyricism and heavy beats. This will be a high-energy, packed-out show.
- Jarki Monno: Playing a fundraiser for Grassroots Suicide Prevention, Jarki brings a really fresh blend of alt-pop, indie, and rap.
Experimental, Comedy & Special Events
- Prostitute (Attempted Martyr): An intense, sold-out experimental gig for those who like their music heavy, noisy, and boundary-pushing.
- The Everly Pregnant Brothers: A brilliant Sheffield-based comedy band who do hilarious, localized parodies of famous songs.
- The Great Escape: In mid-May, the venue will serve as a core hub for The Great Escape festival, hosting dozens of showcase bands from all over the world.
