Tucked out of sight beneath the Victorian arches of Brighton Railway Station, The Green Door Store is a legendary cornerstone of Brighton’s grassroots music scene. It’s the kind of intimately gritty, fiercely independent venue where you go to see bands right before they explode into the public eye..
The Vibe
Walk in and you are greeted by a beautifully raw, underground space. The decor leans heavily into the archway’s industrial history — think smoke-blackened brickwork, cobblestone floors, and DJs setting up decks on vintage ash cans.
The venue is split into two halves: a front bar that is always free to enter, and a dedicated live music room at the back. It’s loud, it’s sweaty, and it completely embodies Brighton’s bohemian, community-first ethos. The programming is incredibly diverse, offering everything from cheap club nights to local post-punk showcases.
The Alumni
Despite a tiny 170-person capacity for live shows, the Green Door Store has a staggering track record of booking future stadium-fillers and critically acclaimed acts just as they are breaking. If you were lucky enough to be in the room over the last 14 years, you could have been inches away from:
-
The 1975
-
Sam Fender
-
The Last Dinner Party
-
Mac DeMarco
-
Public Service Broadcasting
It also serves as a flagship venue for Brighton’s annual Great Escape Festival, meaning the unknown band you watch there on a Thursday afternoon is highly likely to be headlining major festivals a few years later.
